Quarrying and land reclamation

Mineral extraction

Glázer-Transz Kft. owns and operates several quarries in the Győr region. Our quarrying activities focus on the professional exploration, extraction and processing of natural mineral resources for industrial and residential use.

The process begins with the removal of the fertile topsoil, which is stored separately for subsequent land reclamation. This is followed by the gradual extraction of quarry materials, which are either stockpiled or transported directly from the quarry in accordance with the approved technical operating plan. All extraction activities are carried out in compliance with occupational safety regulations and under the supervision of the mining authority.

Depending on their intended use, the extracted materials are screened, sorted, quality-checked and certified. Material handling is carried out using suitable loading and transport machinery, while accurate weighing and documentation ensure traceable material management.

An important part of our operations is reducing environmental impact. To minimise dust on access roads, we use our own water-spraying vehicle.

Following extraction, land reclamation is an essential part of quarrying. This involves restoring the site and preparing it for future use. Glázer-Transz Kft. carries out every stage of the quarrying process with this long-term responsibility in mind.

Topsoil removal

The upper layer of humus-rich soil removed when a quarry is opened is stored separately. This soil-like material cannot be sold. In most cases, it is classified as agricultural land soil and is therefore subject to Act CXXIX of 2007 on the Protection of Agricultural Land.

The use of this topsoil is governed by the quarry’s land reclamation plan, which specifies that the material must be returned as the uppermost layer during the final restoration of the quarry site.

Land reclamation

Following the extraction of raw materials, quarry sites are most commonly reclaimed by backfilling the excavated areas. At Quarry III, land reclamation is currently taking place alongside sand extraction. This process involves using inert materials that have become waste and are no longer suitable for their original purpose. Under strict monitoring and record-keeping procedures, non-hazardous construction and demolition waste delivered in accordance with a recovery permit issued by the environmental authority is sorted, crushed and processed. As the final stage of the recovery process, the processed material is used to backfill the areas where sand has been extracted. The substantial volume of fill material, including overburden soil, enables nature to gradually reclaim the areas affected by quarrying once operations have been completed.

At Gravel Quarry X, following gravel extraction, land reclamation will take place at a later stage by backfilling the excavated areas, restoring the natural landscape and finally replacing the humus-rich topsoil. After decades of responsible quarrying, the restored site will once again become suitable for agricultural or forestry use. This is the full cycle that Glázer-Transz Kft. follows in the operation and management of its gravel quarries.
